Call for Volunteers

Exam Proctors
Have you taken an exam through Advocis in the past? Did you ever feel that one day it would be nice to oversee rather than write it? Advocis Vancouver is currently looking for members to help proctor upcoming exams. The time commitment is small as Advocis exams are written only three times per year and each is maximum 4 hours in length.

Update 2010 Facilitator
This update is a popular Advocis event, well attended and offering excellent information plus lots of credits for attendees. Our Chapter is now offering this training twice a year with the next one in November. We are looking for someone to act as Facilitator for this session, requirements as follows:

• Must have a CFP/CLU designation
• Must attend a conference call training session with National on one of the scheduled dates; September 9 or 23, October 7 or 21.

UPDATE 2010 is a DVD presentation that has been developed by National. The facilitator will have a guide that includes a complete slide-by-slide script to accompany the presentation. So, although the facilitator is required to have a CFP/CLU designation, pre-knowledge of the program material is not required.

The facilitator will earn 6 CE credits for the day, and will also have access to complete part 2 of the program, which is an online self-study, for an additional 6 credits.

If you are interested please call Warren Campbell at 604-688-8909.

Planning School – Gold Medal Edition

In celebration of Vancouver's involvement in the 2010 Winter Olympics, our theme for this year's Planning School is "The Gold Medal Edition". This will be a highly technical event featuring professionals from across the country. In honour of the Olympic theme, we are pleased to announce that we will have an athlete as one of our feature speakers. This event entails two full days of informative, engaging and motivating presentations, all focused around a single, in-depth case study developed to feature a wide variety of the issues you encounter on a daily basis. This will be a great educational event that will provide valuable networking opportunities for financial advisors.

The Planning School takes place from October 26th - 27th, once again at Simon Fraser University's spectacular Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Please reserve early as there are only 160 seats available on a first come first serve basis.

Obituary: Bruce Alexander Henry McRae
It is with great sadness that we announce Bruce’s passing on August 3rd. He grew up in Vancouver and spent summers on the family farm in Manitoba. In 1958 a friend suggested he follow in his dad's footsteps and give life insurance a try - and he had found his calling. During his career Bruce studied and added qualifications; CLU, CFP and CH.F.C. He was a Life Member of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver, served as National Chairman of ADVOCIS, was President of the Vancouver chapter and past President of the local CLU chapter. Bruce made a significant contribution to our organization and we extend our condolences to his family.

We found it necessary to cancel the June 11th Special Event “Tips from the Top Producers” Seminar. There were some great international speakers lined up, however with the large MDRT conference, along with other industry events on the same day, there was a very low turnout and we decided it was best to cancel. This event was not part of the season pass offering this year, so passholders were not affected by the cancellation.

We are pleased to announce that Bonnie Ritchie, Advocis Vancouver Treasurer, was the local organizer for the “Great Strides Walk” in Surrey on May 30, 2010. Advocis National is a TEAM Partner of the Walk, which raises funds for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Bonnie tells us that the walk was a great success, with the participants treated to a BBQ upon completion. Congratulations to Bonnie and Advocis members who participated, to help raise funds for a good cause.

Thank you for your support!

The 10th Annual Advocis/GAMA Cystic Fibrosis Charity Golf Challenge was held on July 22nd and we raised a record donation of $17,000 for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation!! Advocis Greater Vancouver would like to thank all of the sponsors and participants who made the event such a great success.

This was a fun filled day including a sunny pre-golf BBQ, putting contest, 135 golfers, closing dinner and great prizes for all! We lucked out with beautiful weather and this definitely set the mood for the day. Our MC, Randall Fell, did a fabulous job of bringing humour and energy to the room at the closing dinner, especially with the impromptu live prize auctions! Thank you to our generous auction winners, Bernie Baigent and David Denroche and of course to all the prize donators and raffle/100% draw ticket buyers!

Everyone was in a charitable mood and we are pleased that Advocis Greater Vancouver was able to hold such a wonderful event for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Hope to see you all there next year!
